During a cross-country photographic expedition to capture
the last remaining tributes to an era gone by, James Gucwa realized as he looked over the
photographs of small town businesses and roadside motels that neon signs began to dominate
the road. These signs were simplistic in their styling and beautifully crafted, in direct
contrast to the uninspired, commercially produced signs that are prevalent today.
An avid motorcyclist, he saw a common thread between the
Harley Davidson, which conveyed the individual personality of the rider and the unique
craftsmanship of neon signs. Each was an artistic expression. It was this inspiration that
turned his paintbrush towards motorcycles and made him an official Harley-Davidson artist.
